Many of us have become aware of a recent article published in The Times that has been widely perceived as sexist. While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, the impact of those opinions changes significantly when expressed through a national platform. Historically, surgery - and particularly orthopaedic surgery - has been a male-dominated field. However, times have changed, and with them, we had hoped that deeply ingrained mentalities would evolve as well.

This is not to argue that men and women possess identical physical strength, but rather to emphasize that when it comes to skill, ability, and competence, women are equally capable. Across the globe, countless women have built outstanding careers in surgery and other professions traditionally viewed as male domains.

It is possible that the article's unfortunate comments stem from the author's lack of familiarity with the subject matter, given their background in sports journalism. Nevertheless, this situation presents an opportunity for reflection on the broader implications of such commentary. We hope it serves as a catalyst for more thoughtful consideration in the future and helps prevent similar missteps.

We believe in the importance of diverse representation in all fields, and we are committed to supporting and uplifting women in surgery and beyond. Let this serve as a reminder that progress is not just about numbers - it is about changing perceptions and ensuring equal respect and opportunity for all.

It is crucial that national platforms use their voices responsibly to inspire change, not reinforce outdated biases. We must strive for a future where ability and determination are the sole measures of competence - where gender is neither a barrier nor a qualifier for excellence.
